Macroglia = astrocytes (fibroblast in cns) and oligodendrocytes. Microglia = macrophages and apc in cns. Infection will recruit normal immune cells to brain. Direct responses such as walking movements, withdrawal reflexes and gi and urogenital functions. Axons able to regenerate as long as they have the framework. Astrocytes and schwann cells can form scar . Microglia are first line responders, cells of normal immune system recruited. Spinal reflexes at the site of injury is lost. Cortical control of segments above the injury is maintained (can localize the injury very accurately) Can affect any are of the cns, white or grey matter, brain or sc. Stimulant at low conc, but depressant at high conc.
