Chapter 12: susan moller okin, from justice gender and the family. Four major flaws between private domestic life and public life: power: the distinguishing feature of the political. Power within the family (eg. husband over wife or parent over child) is not recognized as a power because it is seen as natural. However, power is a form of physical violence (eg. spousal abuse). The state enforces the terms of marriage, the rights of husband"s to their wives property and bodies, and made it difficult for women to file for divorce. They also play a role in divorce and child custody. This impacts how families live their domestic life: domestic life is where most socialization has taken place: gender is produced through gender parenting. Since mothers or female figures are usually the primary source of nurturers, it results in a sexually differentiated development path for girls and boys.
