Feminists seek gender equality - employment, equity, pay equity, equity in law, equity in the various institutions of government, and equity in the family setting. Gender issues have created considerable political controversy and are of increasing significance. Women taking increasing role in economic and political systems. Pm justin trudeau named cabinet of 50% females, proportion of women in politics and government remains far below this figure. Abortion, divorce, child care, labour, reproduction issues, sexual harassment, and sexual assault are major societal concerns. Beyond equality of women are other gender and sexual-orientation issues concerning lgbt community. Concepts of gender and sex are closely related, distinction = sex refers to biological differences, while gender refers to behavioural, cultural, or psychological traits. Social structures - traditions, customs, practices, institutions - important to determine how individual members of society see themselves and behave. Other identities overshadowed gender for 100 years after confederation.
