POLS 3180 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-16: Symbolic Interactionism, Auguste Comte, Antipositivism
Document Summary
Theory: an explanation of observed regularities or patterns. De nitions: specify what the key terms in the theory means. Descriptions: outline the characteristics of the phenomena of interest. Relational statements: connect two or more variables together to convey information. Deterministic: variables always go together in a certain way. Probabilistic: variables go together with some degree of regularity but the relationship is not inevitable. Theories of the middle range: more limited in scope, can be tested directly with empirical evidence (ex: anomie theory) Grand theories: general and abstract (ex: symbolic interactionism) Deductive approach: make hypothesis then do research to try and explain the hypothesis. Inductive approach: looks at all relevant data then makes a hypothesis. Positivism can only be con rmed by senses, must be objective (same results, different researcher), must be scienti c statements. Interpretivism says it is the role of scientists to grasp the subjective meaning of peoples actions.
