Document Summary
Psychology: is a collection of disciplines composed of many overlapping fields of study, two unifying qualities: Psychology involves the study of behaviour that can include perceptions, thoughts, and emotions. Psychologists employ the scientific method in their work. Through these two qualities we can define psychology as the scientific study of behaviour thought, and experience and how they can be affected by physical, mental, social, and environmental factors. Scientific method: a way of learning about the world through collecting observations, developing theories to explain them and using the theories to make predictions. Involves a dynamic interaction between hypothesis testing and the construction of theories. (see txt pg. 3 fig 1. 1: hypothesis: is a testable prediction about processes that can be observed and measured. Theories are built from hypotheses are parts that are repeatedly questioned and confirmed. If a hypothesis is supported, it provides more support the theory. In turn, good theories eventually become accepted explanations of behaviour or other phenomena.
