10. 2: infancy and childhood: cognitive and emotional development. Complexity of human brain begins to unfold immediately after birth. Jean piaget observed and tested his children"s abilities from infancy onwards. Cognitive development- the study of the changes in memory, thought and reasoning processes that occur throughout the lifespan. Interested in explaining how different ways of thinking and reasoning develop. Knowledge is modified by 2 processes- assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation- conservative process, whereby people fit new info into the belief systems they already have. Children thinking girls have long hair, they assimilate this into their beliefs, but then they are challenged when they see a girl with short hair. Accommodation- a creative process whereby people modify their belief structures based on experience. Needing to alter the belief system that thinks all girls must have long hair.
