PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Neurogenesis, Microsoft Onenote, Cerebral Cortex
Document Summary
Cerebral cortex: intricate fabric of interconnected neural cells covering the cerebral hemispheres. *the body"s ultimate control and information processing center. Contains 20-23 billion nerve cells and 300 trillion synaptic connections - supporting the billions of nerve cells are 9 times that amount of spidery glial cells. Like worker bees, they provide nutrients and insulating myelin, guide neural connections and mop up neurotransmitters. May also play a role in thinking and learning. Each hemisphere"s cortex is subdivided into 4 lobes: Involved in speaking, muscle movements, making plans & judgment. Located at the top of head towards the rear. Receives sensory input for touch and body position. Located lying at the back of the head. Includes the auditory areas, each receiving information primarily from the opposite ear. Motor cortex: rear of frontal lobes, controls voluntary movements. Sensory cortex: area of front of the parietal lobes that register and process body touch and movement sensations.
