24 views2 pages

Document Summary

Emotion: response of the whole organism involving physiological arousal (heart pounding), expressive behaviours (quickened pace) and conscious experience (thoughts and feeling surrounding the situation) James-lange theory: theory that our experience of emotion is our awareness of our physiological responses to emotion-arousing stimuli. Cannon-bard theory: the theory that an emotion-arousing stimulus simultaneously triggers physiological responses and the subjective experience of emotion. Two-fact theory: schachter-singer theory that to experience emotion one must be physically aroused and cognitive label the arousal. Physical reactions and our thoughts (perceptions, memories, interpretations) together create emotion. Spillover effect: arousal spills over from one event to the next. Bodily responses and experienced emotions occur separately but simultaneously. Zajonc and ledoux suggested that we experience some emotions without any conscious, cognitive appraisal. Lazarus, schachter and singer emphasized the importance of appraisal and cognitive labeling in our experience of emotion. In a crisis, sympathetic division of autonomic nervous system (ans) mobilizes your body for action.
