PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Confirmation Bias, Polo Shirt, Conjunction Fallacy
Document Summary
Problem solving: means accomplishing a goal when the solution or the path to the solution is not clear. There seems to be 2 common techniques we use; one is more objective, logical, and slower, while the other is more subjective, intuitive and quicker. Losing your phone: you tried calling it but couldn"t hear it ringing, therefore it"s not in the house. A logical approach would be to make a list of all the places you may have lost it and retracing your steps. An intuitive approach is to look in all the places where you"ve lost things before. Algorithms: problem-solving strategies based on a series of rules. Heuristics: problem-solving techniques that stem from prior experiences and provide an educated guess as to what is the most likely solution. Heuristics are quite efficient and allow us to find solutions quickly. Some problems can be solved using both algorithms and heuristics.
