PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Cognitive Dissonance
Document Summary
4 common approaches include technological, legal, economic, and raising awareness. Technological approach focuses on making the desired behaviour as easy as possible through changing the technologies and structures that influence the person. Legal approach focuses on policy changes- laws will influence people to behave a specific way. Economic approach focuses on financial incentives and penalties (taxes and pricing). Raising awareness approach focuses on information and making it largely available. Info can appeal to people through 2 general routes . Central route to persuasion: occurs when people pay close attention to the content of the message, evaluate the evidence presented, and examine the logic of the arguments. People internalize the message as something they believe in. Attitude or belief change tends to be strong and long lasting. Peripheral route to persuasion: persuasion will depend upon other features that are not directly related to the message itself, such as the attractiveness of the person delivering the information.
