PSYC 2390 Chapter Notes - Chapter appendix: Probability Distribution, Detection Theory
Document Summary
Difers from a psychophysical experiment in 2 ways: only one simulus intensity is presented, on some of the trials, no simulus is presented. Without changing intensity we can change percentage of hits and false alarms: payofs can manipulate moivaions. First to get to 100% is more sensiive. All the other simuli in the environment: false alarms are caused by noise, signal detecion theory describes presening a simulus plus noise vs just noise, instead of signal vs no signal. Probability distribuion: tell us what the chances are that a given loudness is due to noise of simuli + noise. High probability of a hit: neutral. Will have a relaively low false alarm rate. Will have a fairly high hit rate, but not as much as liberals: conservaive. Low hit rate: person"s sensiivity to a simulus is indicated by the distance ( d) between the peaks of the n+s and n distribuions.
