Percepion of shades ranging from white to grey to black: the hermann grid: seeing spots at intersecions. Grey images appear at intersecions of white corridors of hermann grid: mach bands: seeing borders more sharply. Illusory light and dark bands near a light-dark border. Bipolar cells send inhibiion to its neighbor: lateral inhibiion and simultaneous contrast. Simultaneous contrast occurs when our percepion of the brightness of 1 colour is afected by the presence of an adjacent or surrounding colour. Grey surrounded by light colour receives more inhibiion than by darker, so it appears darker. A display that can"t be explained by lateral inhibiion: whites illusion. According to lateral inhibiion in simultaneous contrast b should appear darker because it is bordered by more white.
