Chapter 7 interconnections between acquisition and retrieval. Putting information into long-term memory is only helpful if you are also able to retrieve that information later on, otherwise it is like putting money into a bank account that you cannot withdrawal from. Godden and baddeley asked scuba divers to learn various materials, some on dry land, while others learned it while underwater. Within each group, half were tested above water and have were tested below. We expect that divers who learn material while underwater will remember the material best if they"re underwater again at the time of the test. The same setting, or context, enables them to use the connections they established earlier. And the same goes with those who learned the information on dry land. Similar studies have been done, including designs to mimic the learning situation of a college student. Half the participants read an article in a quiet setting, while half read in noisy circumstances.
