Chapter 8: concepts and generic knowledge. Use definitions to determine something. Come up with plausible definition but then its easy to find exceptions to it. Probabilistic phrasing preserves what is good about definitions, allows a degree of uncertainty some number of expressions to the rule. No defining features but can find similar attributes, but the identity of the features depend on subgroup of the family. Prototypes and typicality effects. Definitions set the boundaries for a category. Get i like to feed robins in the park and i like to feed penguins in the park. These edited sentences were shown to different participants and they were asked to rate how silly the sentences seems. The hypothesis is that people think about a category they are thinking about the prototype for it. Meaning of the sentence wont change if we substitute a prototypical category for the category name. Substituting a non prototypical member may yield a ridiculous proposition.
