To understand personality we need to understand what the person is like. We need to understand genetics, brain structure, hormones, neurons and how a person copes in situations. Personality is universal, it is shared by similar people, but are unique to each individual. Personality psychology: scientific study of what makes us who we are. Traits: individual"s personality is more than the sum of his/her parts. Self and identity: our own sense of who we are including self-concept, self-esteem, and social identity. Intrapsychic: looking within our conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings that also make up our personality. Early experiences left an incredible imprint in adult personalities (sigmund freud) People regulate themselves both consciously and unconsciously. Regulation and motivation: how people adjust their responses to the environment, both consciously and unconsciously. Traits: person"s typical way of thinking, feeling and acting in various situations at different times. Some traits we are born with, others we develop from socialization.
