PSYC 2740 Chapter 17: chapter 17
Document Summary
Culture: local within-group similarities and profound between-group differences of any sort ex. physical, behavioural, psychological and attitudinal: collectively referred to as cultural variation. Cultural personality psychology has 3 goals: discover principles of underlying diversity, discover how human psychology shapes culture, discover who cultural understandings shape psychology. Three major approaches to culture: evoked: cultural differences caused by different environmental conditions activating a predictable set of responses. There is an underlying universal mechanism to this and environmental differences in how mechanisms are activated in people. Ex: mating strategies can be evoked by childhood experience: impulsivity and having multiple partners, along with having children earlier is fostered by: harsh, inconsistent childcare, erratically provided resources, marital discord. This stuff ends up being a cycle because kids that see their parents with multiple partners, discord etc. will also end up doing the same. Ex: moral values of people are transmitted early in life; they may be culture speci c or they may be universals.
