PSYC 3020 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Cerebral Circulation, Polygraph, Ground Truth
Document Summary
Polygraph: measures a persons autonomic nervous system responses. Canada, officers used them for assistance in criminal investigations. Used in the past to screen out potential employees but employee polygraph. Protection act of 1988 restricted private companies in using this. Polygraph disclosure test: gain information about an offenders past behavior. Types of polygraph tests: the comparison question test. It includes a pretest interview and a series of questions following it. During the pretest interview, the polygraph examiner tries to learn the most possible about the case and the suspect. It is assumed that the suspects who are guilty are assumed to react more to the relevant questions than the comparison and vice versa for those who are innocent. There is three possible outcomes: truth, deception or inconclusive: the concealed information test. This does not test deception but seeks to determine whether the suspect knows details about a crime that only the person who committed it would know.
