We aren"t as good at reporing memory lapses as we get older: complaints about memory are more closely related to depression than actual memory performance, we need more evidence than subjecive feelings of memory failure. Especially since impaired memory is the most powerful predictor of alzheimer"s. Longitudinal approach disease: a sample of the populaion will be tested repeatedly over a long period of ime, advantages. Efects of age on the performance of each individual can be studied. People with alzheimer"s can be singled out early on: disadvantages. Paricipants learn over the years due to repeated tesing. Cross-secional approach: diferent groups of people are tested across the age range and their performance is measured on a single occasion, disadvantages. Cannot relate data to earlier data or their future performance. Tendency for people born at diferent ime periods to difer as a result of historic changes in diet, educaion and other social factors.
