PSYC 3450 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Longitudinal Study, Normative Social Influence, Fighting Instinct
Document Summary
Hydraulic view that delivers noxious stimuli to another organism: hostile aggression, instrumental aggression. Aggressive energy would build up to a critical level and then be discharged through some form of violent, destructive behaviour. Ethologist lorenz described aggression as a fighting instinct triggered by certain eliciting cues in the environment. Most learning theorists have rejected an instinctual explanation for violent and destructive acts. Intentional definition of aggression implies that an aggressive act is any form of behaviour designed to harm or injure another living being who is motivated to avoid such treatment. Aggressive acts are categorized into 2 categories: If an actor"s goal is to harm or injure a victim. Situations in which one person harms another as a means to some other end (ex. knocking a playmate down while trying to take his candy) The same act could be classified as hostile or instrumental aggression dependent on the circumstances.
