PSYC 4750 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Affective Forecasting, Arthur Schopenhauer, Emergence
Document Summary
To be motivated is to be moved into action, or to decide on a change in action (schopenhauer) Action or behavior is induced by internal motives or environmental incentives. A motive is an internal disposition to be concerned with and approach positive incentives and avoid negative incentives. Incentive is the anticipated reward or aversive event available in the environment. Internal dispositions referred to as motives push an individual toward some end state. External objects referred to as incentives and goals pull individuals toward an end state. For humans biological and psychological motives push an individual into action while environmental prospects like incentives and goals pull an individual. Individuals are not pushed/pulled at random but instead directed toward specific ends which are known as goals. Emotions push individuals toward end states defined by the aim of the emotion. Those end states also act like goals and pull the individuals.
