All theories contain concepts which are the building blocks of theory. Deducive: begins with an abstract, logical relaionship among concepts, then moves toward concrete empirical evidence (general to speciic) Purpose is to build a theory that is faithful to the evidence. Theoreical frameworks: orientaions of looking at the social world, that provide collecions of assumpions, concepts, and forms of explanaion. Structural funcionalism: society is a system of interdependent parts that is in balance. Exchange theory (also called raional choice): human interacions are similar to economic transacions (people try to maximize pleasure and minimize pain) Symbolic interacionism: people transmit and receive symbolic communicaions when they socially interact. Conlict theory: society is made up of groups that have opposing interests and ight for power. Predicion a statement that something will occur. Theoreical explanaion a logical argument that tells why something occurs, it refers to a general rule or principle.
