SOAN 3070 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Hermeneutic Circle, Richard Rorty, Hermeneutics
Document Summary
Hermeneutics and critical hermeneutics: exploring possibilities within the art of interpretation. Hermeneutics is seen by ferraris (1996) as the art of interpretation by transformation , and is thought to be a very important concept in, even urgent, in our post-positivistic time. Greater attention given to hermeneutic ways of learning can help enrich knowledge, and make the way we interpret qualitative research more explicit by limiting assumptions. The concept of hermeneutics was originally used to interpret ancient and biblical works, but is now applied more generally to human sciences. This concept had had a long history of influence on europe, but only limited influence on north. Though it can be very useful and beneficial in our education, hermeneutics has not been widely discussed or adopted where we live. Even so, rorty and sandywell suggest hermeneutics reveals the mediated process of human understanding --> which is the same way qualitative research focusses its information.
