What is deviance: recognized violaion of cultural norms, crime: violaion of a society"s formally enacted criminal law, social control. Atempts by society to regulate people"s thoughts and behaviours. Criminal jusice system: formal response by police, courts and prison oicials to violaions of law: the biological context. Lombroso deined criminals based on facial features but he was wrong. Geneic researchers concluded that defecive genes together with env"t factors were strong predictors. Criical review: limited explanaion of crime: personality factors. Reckless and dinitz: asked teachers to categorize good and boy males. Assuming that staying out of trouble mean control of deviant impulses, this analysis was called containment theory. The funcions of deviance: structural-funcional analysis: durkheim"s insight, deviance airms cultural values/norms. Any deiniion of virtue rests on an opposing idea of vice: responding to deviance clariies moral boundaries. By deining some ppl as deviant, ppl draw boundaries b/w right and wrong: responding to serious deviance brings people together, deviance encourages social change.
