o Crime against the person

• Directly or indirectly causes the death of another human being
o Not culpable
▪ Not considered an offence
• Police officer who shoots a dangerous, armed
offender
o Culpable
▪ Considered an offence
• Murder, manslaughter, infanticide
• Murder
o Act meant to cause death
o First degree: planned and deliberate
o Second degree: deliberate act that was
unplanned
▪ Does not include commission of
other offences
(kidnapping/terrorism)
• Manslaughter
o Considered either an unlawful act not
intended to cause death
▪ Motorist involved in street race
is killed
o Or criminal negligence
▪ Acts that shows disregard for
the lives and safety of others

o Mother kills newborn baby

• Least reported
• Level 1
o Least physical injury
• Level 2
o With a weapon, threats to use a weapon, or causing bodily
harm
• Level 3
o Wounds, maims, disfigures, or endangers the life of the victim
▪ Robbery
• Involves a threat or use of violence to carry out a theft
• Sentencing can be severe
