Concerned with how members of society think and talk about and react to behaviour, beliefs and conditions they regard as unacceptable. Looks at how deviance is de ned, conceptualized and represented and how those de nitions, conceptualizations and representations are enacted and with what consequences. Social control: efforts to construct and ensure conformity to a norm. Social control includes all of the processes by which people de ne and respond to deviant behaviour. It is both formal and informal, both governmental and interpersonal, both internal and external. It is universal: all societies set rules- some members of the society violates some of those rules and all societies attempt to enforce those rules by punishing or otherwise controlling those violators. Internal: operates through the process of socialization by learning and adopting the norms of a society or a particular group or collectivity within a society. All people are socialized by particular identi able agents (family, school, peers, media)
