SOC 2070 Chapter 2: SOC 2070 Chapter 2 Notes
Document Summary
The sociology of deviance is made up of two distinct but interlocking enterprises: essentialism: deviance is objectively real and can be replicated. Concern: process in which the act is judged and how it is reacted too as a deviant behaviour. Positivists: believe and must believe that an objective common core or common thread holds deviance and crime together. They do not believe that it is just a matter, more likely to stress the essential. Constructionists: stress the process by which certain things come to be regarded judged as a crime or deviance. It is based on three fundamental assumptions: empiricism: we can know the world through our ve senses. It is with these senses that they belief the observer gets some sense impressions of the way things are. While things may not be directly observable, it is hard to base itself on ideas of the past.
