SOC 2700 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Counterculture, Richard Cloward, Shoplifting
Document Summary
Subculture theories --the studying of gang delinquency and delinquent subcultures. During the 1950s the segregaion between classes was apparent. The middle-class believed that they were beter than the lower class. They believed that the delinquency and gang acivity in the lower class was due to the fact that those individuals did not work hard enough to beter their situaions. A community that is organized and integrated has greater social control over the acions and behaviours of the juveniles in that community. This control exists due to organized crime members residing within the community with their own families. Due to these people having connecions to be able to inluence and paricipate in poliics, they are able to keep their streets safe due to increased police presence. Albert cohen wrote delinquent boys: the culture of the gang and atempted to solve the problem of how a delinquent subculture could begin.
