Document Summary

Embryo: the developing human from 2-8 weeks after fertilization. All organ systems are formed during this time. Fetus: the developing human from the 9th week to birth. Growth and refinement of structures occur during this time. Small-for-gestational-age: an infant born at term weighing less than 2. 5kg; infants who are boron on time but have failed to grow normally. Preterm/premature: an infant born before 37 weeks of gestation. Low-birth-weight: a birth weight less than 2. 5kg; born either too early or too small. The weight of the infant at birth is about 25% of the total pregnancy weight gain. The placenta, amniotic fluid, and changes in maternal tissues accounts for the rest. Large-for-gestational-age: an infant weighing more than 4kg at birth. Excess weight increases risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, difficult delivery, caesarean section and having a large-for-gestational-age baby. After birth, gradual weight loss is important for breastfeeding to ensure milk production is not compromised.
