The azande used witchcraft beliefs to explain unfortunate things and their use of oracles and magic to control the actions of others. Mangu was a substance in the body of witches located under the sternum. The older the witch, the more powerful (the magic was part of the body and grew as it grew) Men use witchcraft on other men, women on other women. The soul is removed from a certain organ in the victims body, causing them to become diseased/sick and they were considered bewitched. All deaths were due to witchcraft and had to be avenged by magic.
