BIOL273 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Autonomic Ganglion, Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor, Axon Terminal

30 views2 pages

Document Summary

Two types of receptors: ligand gated ion channels (fast) (direct response) and g protein coupled receptors (slower, more long lasting response) (indirect response) Neurotransmitter needs to be degraded or inactivated. An autonomic pathway is a 2 neuron chain. Preganglionic neuron is in the cns and relays a message to autonomic ganglion (cluster of cells outside cns), which sends message to target tissue through post ganglionic neuron. Autonomic pathway divides into two branches: sympathethic (rest+digest) and parasympathetic (fight or flight) They share the same general structure, both operate through 2 neuron chain pathway. Autonomic ganglia: are like mini integrating centers- receive input from body and send to tissues. Sympathethic ganglia are close to the spinal cord so they have short preganglionic neurons and long postganglionic neurons. Parasympathetic ganglia are near brain or far from spinal chord so they have long pre gang neurons and short post gang neurons.
