We group together similar elements because we perceive them as related to each other. Even if one thing is different, the eye still groups it together! If there are variations of hue, the eye accepts them as familiar. Notice that elements are repeated, and larger shapes/stronger colors: makes us forget details, used in marketing. Helps convey a feel or a brand image: helps the viewer remember the image. Watching a commercial many different times: communicate a message. Further the goal by making shapes/patterns, emphasizing contrast and moving the eye in the right direction. Group constant elements together as a background and notice the ones with variations. Series of elements with different size/shape/color, create a sequence: repetition of this creates a pattern. Exclude things that are different, yet they stand out. Refers to fundamental reason we perceive elements in a composition to be part of a group: they are near each other.
