Document Summary

Module 12. 3 psychodynamic and humanistic approaches to personality. Despite many criticisms of sigmund freud, he is one of the most influential psychologists in history. He was a pioneer in the study of personality and the treatment of psychological disorders, and many ideas about human consciousness continue to resonate with many psychologists and are wildly accepted and used in contemporary society. Freud was a neurologist, not trained in psychology: freud initially believed their issues could be resolved through investigating physiology and isolating biological factors that contributed to problems. But after examination, he realized their emotional struggles could not be understood at the physiological level, but rather the depths of the mind. This led him to begin trying to understand the personalities of the patients and psychological dynamics that led to the problems they were experiencing: over time, observations and ideas coalesced into his psychodynamic theory.
