PSYCH211 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Prototype Theory, Piggy Bank, Dual Representation
Document Summary
Psychology 211 chapter 9: cognitive development in early childhood. Spans from ages 2 to, the most obvious change is an increase in representational or symbolic activity. Piaget said language is our most flexible means of mental representation. Did not regard language as a primary factor in childhood cognitive change. Believed sensorimotor activity leads to internal images of experiences, which children then label with words. Piaget believed that through pretending, young children practice and strengthen new acquired representational schemes. Play detaches from the real life conditions associated with it: after age 2 children pretend with less realistic toys. Play becomes less self centered: kids begin to direct pretend actions toward objects. Make believe becomes less self centered as children realize agents and recipients of actions can be independent of themselves. Play includes more complex combinations of schemes: sociodramatic play: the make believe with others that is underway by the end of the second year and increases in complexity during early childhood.
