PSYCH261 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Central Nervous System, Axon Terminal, Peripheral Nervous System
Document Summary
Structure and functions of cells of the nervous system. Sensory neuron: neuron that detects changes int he external or internal environment and sends info about these changes to the central nervous system (cns) Motor neuron: neuron located within the cns that controls the contraction of a muscle or the secretion of a gland. The nervous system consists of two basic divisions . Central nervous system (cns): the brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns): part of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord. Including the nerves attached to the brain and spinal cord. Most important cells of the nervous system - neurons and their supporting cells - and to the blood-brain barrier (which provides neurones in the cns with chemical isolation from the rest of the body. Neuron (nerve cell) is the information-processing and information-transmitting element of the nervous system. Most cells have four structures/regions: cell body/soma, dendrites, axon, terminal buttons.
