Classical view: emphasizes contemplation, enjoyment of self in search of knowledge, debate, politics and cultural enlightenment. Leisure as a state of being: work is a means to provide for life"s needs, recreation is rest from work. Leisure seen as the freedom from the necessity of labour, leisure is a state of being. Intrinsic pleasure: spiritual attitude, virtue of moral judgment, important to use rightly. Leisure has three functions: relaxation, entertainment and development of personality. Leisure may be seen as a form of political practice: everyday leisure activities can challenge or weaken dominant belief systems. Casual leisure: short-term, intrinsically rewarding activity with little to no special training to enjoy it: may include play, relaxation, passive or active entertainment, conversation, sensory stimulation, casual volunteering. Project-based leisure: short-term, moderately complicated, though infrequent creative undertaking carried out in free time: may happen once or infrequently. Leisure as a symbol of social class: conspicuous consumption.
