Chapter 2 & 3 notes: classical and modern sociological theory. View the social world as a dynamic system of interrelated and interdependent parts. Social structures help people fulfill their wants and desires. Two part system of structural and their associated functions is called structural functionalism. Recognizes the clear link between classical social theory and the two most famous influential. American functionalists, robert merton and talcott parsons preferred the narrower more precise terminology. Functionalists view human society as being similar to an organism. Organic analogy: belief that society is like an organism with interdependent and interrelated parts. By suggesting the society is like an organism, the system"s natural state of affairs is one at equilibrium a point at which the system is stable and homeostatic. Society must meet the needs of the majority; when it does not, the system is sick and must make measurements to return to a state of equilibrium and harmony.
