Classical theory focus on : why people break the law, and background, character and motivation of offender, if advances own interest. Deterrence theories focus on: factors influencing an individual"s decision to commit crime. Certainty is more important the severity i. e. having caller id, to see who is making the calls. Some believe doing time increases future criminal behaviour because it causes a stigma and reduce change of life in non criminal world. May be adjusted to criminal life, learn criminal skills. Threat of adult penalties to people 18 only had a slight deterrence of crime. They do not lower crime, just cost money. Offenders do not think they will be caught. Rational choice theory people break the law because they believe it will provide them with reward, perception of risk and reward. Criminals are more likely to commit their offense along the path of they travel in the course of their daily lives.
