Importance of listening: besides being the most frequent form of communication, listening may be a more highly valued skill than speaking. An important skill when looking for a job. Listening: process of receiving, interpreting and responding to spoken and non-verbal messages (it involves more than just hearing) Takes place when the brain reconstructs these electrochemical impulses into a representation of the original sound and then gives them meaning. Not automatic sometimes we hear, but we don"t listen. Hearing: process by which sound waves strike the eardrum and cause vibrations that are transmitted to the brain. Takeaway: it"s not desirable to have such intensive listening, but its important to have the ability to be an accurate receiver when it really does matter. All listeners do not receive the same message: when two people are listening to another talk, they aren"t always receiving the same message or interpreting it the same way (recap: perception)
