Chapter 5 - education and social change (by m. horton and p. freire): Reforming the system provides the risk of masking the issues, and attempting to make it more humane. Stated that education did not include "out of school learning" At the beginning, highlander education was supported, but then looked down upon. The education system was exiled by the us. By changing education, we would be able to change society --> e. g. land ownership/voting/revolution. Believed in using the schooling system to fight the social system. Co-opting could be seen as a way of struggling. In order to not be co-opted, we should attempt to do nothing. We should then take the space we are given to advocate and start co-opting. Paulo was co-opted by being sent to brazil, but his experience in brazil shaped his thoughts for struggling against the system. Brazil in the 60s --> he advocated for peasants having a right to vote.
