EOSC 114 Chapter Notes - Chapter 24-25: Hurricane Igor, Sea Spray, Wave Power
Document Summary
Hurricane size is approximately 15 km deep and 300 km diameter. As the hurricane category gets higher, the eye pressure becomes lower, wind speed and storm surge increase. The energy that drives hurricanes comes from the warm ocean (solar energy from the sun). The greatest hurricane frequency would be in the summer and late fall (hurricane season): the official atlantic hurricane season is normally june through november. In order for the hurricane to exist, the warm ocean water has to be at least 60 m deep. By creating high waves, it promotes evaporation, adding moisture into the air. Hurricanes form in the tropics, but not at the equator explained by the coriolis effect. At the equator, you are not rotating about the vertical axis. When a hurricane lands, it can"t make sea spray and slowly dies. Ways that hurricane can be wiped out of existence: landfall, cold water, large-scale system (collide into cold front)
