Others have written that socrates had a genuine boastful manner of speaking . Socrates had already come to the trial believing death to be most preferable. Basically if you annoy the judges you die. You can weasel your way out of guilt with a moving speech. Socrates" believes argues that perhaps maybe the deities believe his time has come. Socrates wishes to live life with his full mental capabilities, rather than lose function in everything and live out his final days frail and a shell of his former self.
