PSYC 350 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Habituation, Body Odor, Longitudinal Study
Document Summary
Beauty is not entirely in the eye of the beholder. We are considering physical appearance before other aspects of beauty. Psychologists have found considerable consensus on topic of beauty. Women have fuller lips and larger eyes; men have wider noses and jaws and larger chins. When viewers are asked to adjust the masculinity-femininity of a computer-generated female face to make it look most attractive, they move it in the direction of the hyperfeminine face. Mens" faces may be attractive but perceived as unkind. Womens" attraction to masculine looking faces varies around the menstrual cycle. Attractiveness increased as it was morphed toward standard childlike face- 30% admixture of babyfacedness produced the most attractive face. Low position of facial features, prominent forehead, large eyes and a small nose- co- opted positive feelings towards viewing children. On male faces, it has a disarming effect that can sometimes increase likeability. Asymmetry signifies that the genetic program has somehow been derailed.
