AHSS*1250 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Fallacy
Document Summary
Ct - chap 4: reasons for belief and doubt. Reasons- we must care about reasons and truth for accepting beliefs. Claims that conflict- they cannot both be true- audience is not justified to believing either one until resolved. Conflicts with observation- if a new claim conflicts with other claims we have good reason to accept, we have. Doubting new claim- easy to resolve conflict if a new claim conflicts with something you know. Can be rejected because of things like common sense, or false claims. Sometimes its hard to say if its not true because its false, so further exploration is necessary. More background (bg) info the claim conflicts with, the more reason to doubt it. A person"s bg info relates to their experience, upbringing, and education. Belief and evidence- we should proportion our belief to the evidence, but can vary according to evidence - the more evidence a claim has in favour, the more believable it is.
