Document Summary
Anp1105 a dr. joanne savory and dr. m zeroual. Major function of respiratory system is to supply the body with oxygen and dispose of carbon dioxide. Upper respiratory system: nose, paranasal sinuses and pharynx. Lower respiratory system: larynx, trachea, branchial tree, alveoli, lungs and pleurae. Internal respiration at the tissues, exchange of gases btwn blood in systemic capillaries and tissue cells. Respiratory zone: site of gas exchange; composed of respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveoli and microscopic structures. Conducting zone: passageways for air in the body and also cleanse, humidify, and warm incoming air (rid air of irritants like dust, bacteria); composed of nose, nasal, cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, terminal bronchioles. Organs/structures of respiratory system: nose only externally visible part of respiratory sys. Functions airway for respiration, moistens and warms incoming air, filters and cleans inspired air, resonating chamber for speech, contains olfactory (smell) receptors.
