Document Summary

Integumentary system means skin, the skin is able to repair itself depending on the intensity of the injury. The skin is mainly many layers of dead skin cells. Skin replaces itself about once a month, depending on the individual. Skin is smoother when an individual is younger because the skin replaces itself faster, as you age it slows down, explaining why it"s not as soft. The colour of our skin varies depending on how much melanin is produced and how long it"s in a certain location for. Dermis: underlying layer (makes up the bulk of the skin) and is mostly composed of connective tissue. It has many layers so it can support the epidermis. Hypodermis (superficial fascia) is composed of adipose tissue, it stores fat and anchors the skin to muscles; it acts as a shock absorber and an insulator to help reduce heat loss. Layers of the epidermis: (from outermost to innermost)
