The anatomical reference point is a standard body posiion called the standard anatomical posiion. In anatomical posiion, body is erect with feet slightly apart. Palms face forward and thumbs point away from the body. Terms right and let refer to those sides of the person being viewed not the observer. Direcional terms allow us to explain where one body structure is in relaion to another. Ex. the ears are lateral to the nose. Two divisions of the body are axial and appendicular parts. Axial part makes up the main axis of our body which includes the head, neck, and trunk. Appendicular part consists of the appendages, or limbs, which are atached to the body"s axis. Regional terms used to designate speciic areas within these major body divisions. Body is secionned, along a lat surface called a plane. Most frequently used body planes are sagital, frontal, and transverse planes, which lie at right angles to one another.
