Social relationships of blood and marriage: form bonds among people, which play a big role in how day-to-day activities are regulated. Kin groups from basis of most social, economic, and political activities in pre-industrial societies. Fictive: not related by blood or by marriage, but act as though they are related. : any kin-group whose members share a direct line of descent from a real or fictional common ancestor. Unilineal descent: descent traced exclusively through either the male of female line of ancestry to establish group membership. Lineage known genealogical links; corporate groups (unilineal kin-group descended from a common ancestor or founder who lived 4-6 generations ago and in which relationships among members can be exactly stated in genealogical terms) Clans: descent claimed from common ancestor, but exact genealogical links unknown. Economic & political functions: owns property intergenerational transfer of land, access to productive resources land & labour; distributes goods, regulates relations with other groups.
