Ant 1101 introduction to social & cultural anthropology. A big man on campus is a collegian who is very well known and/or popular has a lot of friends, a cool car, a hip wardrobe, nice smile, sports connection, sense of humour. Big man term also has similar meaning in anthro. Many indigenous cultures had a political figure that anthropologists call the big man : personality characteristics that enabled big man to attract loyal supporters (lots of friends) included wealth, generosity, eloquence, physical fitness, bravery, and supernatural powers. Although contemporary politicians may use their own wealth to finance their campaigns, they also solicit labour and $ (rather than pigs) fro m supporters with their supporters area. Like big men successful american politicians try to be generous. Payback may take form of largesse (e. g. earmarks) to a particular. Tribal big men amass wealth and then give away pigs. For the big man, eloquence and communication skills contribute.
