Applying newly invented light microscopes to biological material. Looked at thinly sliced cork (dead cell) from a mature tree, he observed tiny compartments. Gave them the latin name cellulae, meaning small rooms . Used a single-lens microscope that he constructed to discover and describe protists, sperm cells, and bacteria. These organisms are so small and wouldn"t be seen by others for another two centuries. Noticed a spherical body inside some cells and called it the nucleus. Speculated that the nucleus had something to do with the development of a cell. Expanded on matthias"s idea and proposed that all plants and animals consist of cells that have a nucleus. Proposed that a cell that forms a part of a larger organism, it also has an individual life of its own. Studied cell growth and reproduction and proposed that cells arise from pre- existing cells dividing. 2. 1 basic features of cell structure and function.
