The climate, water, nutrient and substrate availability ( think of these 5 factors. Two universal principles of plants : plants occur in patterns, groups of species. Topic 5 = lec 4-lec 5 = properties of terrestrial environments and their ecological consequence ( biomes, productivity, species associations). Tolerance limits = the range of physical conditions within which a species can. When conditions exceed the species tolerance limits, the organisms must adapt if all of this fails == the result is local extinction. Together the physical and biological environment determine the species geographic range= the region in which a particular species is found. zone are determined by the physical conditions characteristic of each elevation. ( look at diagram) Series of vegetation zones are associated with specific elevations. At each elevation, the north slope is cooler than the south slope, thus, the vegetation zones occur at lower elevations on the north side of the peak.
